The new Horizon 2020 project “SIEUSOIL” starts

On June 24, the Kick off Meeting of the SIEUSOIL project took place in Thessaloniki (Greece). It is a project co-financed by the European Commission under the Research and Innovation program (2014-2020) belonging to Horizon 2020. The main objective of the project is to design, implement and test a shared China-EU Web Observatory platform that will provide Open Linked Data to monitor status and threats of soil and assist in decision making for sustainable support of agro-ecosystem functions, in view of the projected climate change..

The project is coordinated jointly for  Aristotle Universisy of Thessaloniki and for CERTH and in it participate 23 entities from Greece, Czech Republic, Belgium, Austria, Spain, Latvia, Portugal, China, Poland, Hungary and Switzerland, among which is AgriSat Iberia, whose participation is mainly focused on leading the WP dedicated to evaluate the management of agro-environmental and socio-economic impacts of project proposals. Also to collaborate in the establishment of indicators of biophysical quality of soil and crops, collaborate in the analysis of the impact on the spatio-temporal variability of yields in managed soils, to participate in the development of viewers and DSS and to collaborate in the evaluation and validation.

The eleven pilot zones are located in Spain, Czech Republic (2 zones), China (4 zones), Belgium (2 zones), Greece and Hungary.

The incorporation of remote sensing and GIS technologies in the monitoring, validation and evaluation of these tests will be a fundamental part of AgriSat’s contribution to the project, as well as the creation and consolidation of a panel of interested users, which integrates the farmers, administration, civil society and NGOs.

The project officially began on June 1 and will last 36 months.
